Process notes

Jet-mill temperature, materials and gas supply

Build on collision milling and dynamic classification, selecting gas conditioning and contact materials for heat sensitivity, moisture, abrasion and purity.

How it works and what it targets

LNJ uses opposed nozzles to accelerate particles into collisions. An internal classifier sends acceptable powder to collection and returns coarse particles to the milling zone. Size depends on classification, feed and material response as well as the nozzles. Coordinate gas conditions, system load and collection pressure drop.

Reference process steps

  1. 1Condition and stabilize the gas supply, then set feeding for the material.
  2. 2Mill through particle collisions and remove acceptable particles by dynamic classification.
  3. 3Collect product and manage coarse return and filter pressure drop.

Configuration and operating conditions

Low-temperature and cooled gas

For heat-sensitive or softening feeds, discuss cooled gas, feed preparation and temperature monitoring. Cooling from jet expansion does not mean the product never warms; measure discharge temperature and changes during sustained operation.

Hot and dry gas

Hot-gas configurations can use thermal energy or serve drying duties where the material permits. Confirm temperature, humidity and thermal stability together. Low humidity is not low temperature; specify gas dew point and product temperature separately.

Liners, seals and cleaning

Discuss ceramic, metallic and treated contact parts for purity and wear. Particle collisions reduce some mechanical contact, but nozzles, classifier wheels, piping and collection can still contribute impurities and belong in testing and maintenance plans.

Open-air or protective closed loop

An air route requires suitable cleanliness, dryness and pressure. Oxidation- or moisture-sensitive powders may warrant a protective closed loop, determined by the material and engineering conditions.

Information needed for selection

Provide feed size/hardness, target distribution, capacity, softening/decomposition temperature, moisture/impurity limits, compressor and gas-conditioning capability.

Discuss selection inputs

Trial and acceptance considerations

Record size, temperature, impurities, collected mass and gas-supply energy for the same configuration. Gas use, throughput and fineness must be tied to the material and conditions.
