Submicron steam milling and validationAn extension of steam milling towards finer size targets, with particular attention to dispersion, classification and material properties.
The publicly described nano steam mill combines superheated steam with fine classification to explore submicron processing in a dry route. The name describes a technology direction rather than a nanoscale guarantee for every material. Agglomeration, analytical dispersion and whether the result is D50 or another metric all affect its meaning.
Information needed for selection
Provide a representative sample, D10/D50/D90 targets, test method, permitted phase change, impurity limits and steam availability. For nanoscale targets, distinguish primary particles from agglomerates.
Four laboratory modules and scale-up evidenceJet milling, impact milling, classification and shaping answer different process questions and can be compared on the same sample.
Laboratory equipment establishes material response and an operating window. Compact, accessible construction supports research changeovers, but industrial capacity cannot be obtained by simply multiplying laboratory output by machine size. Define the test objectives first, then choose the module, contact materials and atmosphere, recording feed, energy, collection and analytical results.
Information needed for selection
Provide sample identity and safety information, existing test results, size/morphology/purity targets, available sample mass and intended industrial output. Sample quantity, timing and fees are agreed for the test plan.
Three-in-one laboratory platformLNM-18FF integrates jet milling, impact milling and classification for comparing processing routes.
Configuration changes let the platform address different tasks: particle-collision milling in jet mode, impact action in mechanical mode and size-fraction separation in classifier mode. Integration simplifies experimental setup, but does not imply all three functions operate simultaneously or have identical sample and throughput requirements.
Information needed for selection
Describe research objectives, sample types and changeover frequency, required modes, size/purity targets, laboratory utilities and space.
Understand D10/D50/D90, cut size, yield, tap density, specific surface area and system-energy boundaries.
One size or efficiency number cannot describe a powder process. Measurement basis, dispersion, sampling location, feed and operating conditions define its meaning. Technical data should state what is measured, how it is measured and which stream/system boundary it represents.
D10, D50 and D90
These are the sizes at which the cumulative distribution reaches 10%, 50% and 90% on the stated basis. Laser diffraction commonly reports a volume distribution; specify volume, number or mass basis and dispersion conditions. Equal D50 values do not imply equal coarse and fine tails.
Cut size and classification efficiency
Cut size characterizes how particles of a given size partition between coarse and fine streams. Classification-efficiency definitions vary; provide the calculation and feed/product masses. Neither is the same quantity as product D50.
Yield and recovery
Yield may mean the mass of the target size fraction relative to feed; recovery may refer to total powder or a target component. Define numerator, denominator and treatment of recycle and retained material.
Sphericity, circularity and aspect ratio
Sphericity describes similarity to a sphere in three dimensions and is not identical to two-dimensional image circularity. Aspect ratio can compare long/short axes or diameter/thickness for platelets. State imaging sampling and calculation methods.
Tap density and specific surface area
Tap density is powder mass per settled volume under a specified tapping procedure; specific surface area is surface area per unit mass. Size, shape, porosity and methods influence both. Neither alone establishes electrochemical or other functional performance.
Temperature, purity and specific energy
Low temperature needs a measurement point and run duration. Contamination control requires contact materials, analytes and detection limits. Specific energy uses acceptable product mass as its denominator and states inclusion of compression, steam, classification, collection and drying.
The LNJ Jet Mill utilizes multiple nozzles to generate high-velocity, sonic-speed airflow, enabling ultrafine pulverization of materials through particle-on-particle collisions. The finely ground particles are then carried into a high-efficiency turbine classifier, where oversized particles are separated and returned to the grinding chamber for further processing.
The LNPE Impact Mill combines two size-reduction mechanisms - high-speed hammer impact and hammer-to-liner compression - to achieve ultrafine grinding in a single continuous process. After comminution, material enters the built-in turbine classifier.
The Jet Pulverizer combines pre-classification, controlled particle impact and prompt separation to target a defined particle-size window while limiting unnecessary fines.
