How it works and what it targets
Closed-loop classification primarily changes the distribution of a powder population rather than grinding it further. Protective gas carries material through the classifier; coarse and fine products are collected separately and filtered gas recirculates. It shares sealing, monitoring and gas-conditioning requirements with inert jet milling, but has a different objective and energy input.
Reference process steps
- 1Feed through sealed interfaces and establish the atmosphere.
- 2Disperse and classify in protective gas, discharging fractions separately.
- 3Filter returning gas, monitor oxygen and manage make-up gas.
Configuration and operating conditions
Standalone or integrated
For existing powder needing coarse or fine removal, evaluate standalone classification to avoid unnecessary milling. An integrated mill/classifier circuit requires coordinated pressure, recycle and controls.
Sensitive-powder interfaces
Metallic, magnetic or hygroscopic powders require checks of gas compatibility, contact materials and discharge isolation. Sampling and packaging are part of the protective-atmosphere boundary.
Information needed for selection
Provide size distribution, density, magnetic behaviour, atmosphere requirements, separation targets, collection method and upstream/downstream pressures.
Discuss selection inputsTrial and acceptance considerations
Acceptance checks separation quality, mass balance, leak-tightness and gas use. Protective conditions follow material testing and engineering design.
