How it works and what it targets
Collection affects both product recovery and the airflow/pressure balance of milling and conveying. Cyclones separate more readily collected particles through swirling flow; bags, cartridges or sintered media retain powder on a filtration surface. Filters require suitable cleaning and discharge to maintain airflow. Filter efficiency or emissions cannot be assigned directly to a cyclone.
Reference process steps
- 1Select pre-separation and filtration for gas flow, loading and particle condition.
- 2Controlled cleaning moves retained powder to the hopper or product outlet.
- 3Monitor pressure drop and exhaust while managing discharge and media maintenance.
Configuration and operating conditions
Bags, cartridges and sintered panels
Bags and cartridges offer different trade-offs in space, filtration area and cleaning. Sintered polymer panels can be considered for specific powders. Select for temperature, humidity, corrosion, adhesion, cleaning gas and cleanability.
Pulse and induced cleaning
Stronger pulses are not automatically better; balance cake release, media life and gas consumption. Nozzles, gas paths and triggers affect cleaning. Hygroscopic duties such as lithium-hydroxide feeding also require control of humid-air ingress.
Special atmospheres and workplace extraction
Antistatic or explosion-protection arrangements follow dust characteristics and project assessment. Workplace extraction, fume hoods and gloveboxes address local operating interfaces and have different objectives from process-product filtration.
Cyclone pre-separation
A cyclone ahead of final filtration can reduce some particulate loading. Its role depends on size, density, flow and the recovery scheme; fines routing and pressure drop require separate calculation.
Information needed for selection
Provide gas flow, temperature/pressure, humidity, dust loading, size/density, adhesion/corrosion, recovery purpose, atmosphere and discharge requirements.
Discuss selection inputsTrial and acceptance considerations
Distinguish product recovery from exhaust concentration, recording media, operating flow, pressure drop and cleaning conditions. Performance must refer to the defined system and test conditions.
