Silicon–carbon composite (Si/C)

Silicon–carbon composites (Si/C) combine silicon and carbon for anode use and are distinct from silicon carbide (SiC) abrasives.

Material-specific processing priorities

Distinguish coated particles, composite particles and sintered agglomerates. Deagglomeration should preserve carbon layers and composite structure while assessing added fines, oxygen content and dispersion.

Process selection

Deagglomeration with particle-structure retention

These are starting points for selection and trials. Choose steps for the actual target; not every material needs every operation.

  1. 01

Characterize feed: record calcination, drying, coating or washing and distinguish primary particles from agglomerates using microscopy and size data.

  2. 02

Deagglomerate before classification: start with the lowest useful intensity, compare mechanical and jet action against agglomerate strength, and check particle and surface damage.

  3. 03

Control grades and atmosphere: separate unwanted coarse/fine fractions, use dry or controlled gas where needed, and collect in an enclosed system with foreign-matter control.

Selection rationale and related equipment

Choose the processing action for the feed before comparing configurations.

Compare jet and mechanical equipment for deagglomeration intensity and use classification to control size tails. Where coatings or secondary particles must survive, verify morphology before scaling throughput; start with laboratory equipment where needed.

Information to prepare before a trial

Chemistry, phase/grade, coating, agglomerate and primary-particle size, target D10/D50/D90, moisture, metal limits and atmosphere requirements.

Also provide planned throughput, continuous or batch operation, intended use, gas/heat utilities and available sample quantity. State measurement methods and dispersion conditions for D10/D50/D90 so trials are comparable.

How to evaluate trial results

Size and microscopy, moisture and impurities, and recovery by stream; electrochemical or formulation performance requires downstream testing.

Trial records should link feed batch and condition with configuration, operating conditions, collection and measurement methods. Throughput, energy and product specifications depend on tests under agreed conditions and should not be transferred across materials or grades.
