Battery Materials
Pitch
Pitch is a carbonaceous binder and coating feedstock. Powder grades are distinguished by origin and softening point and should not be confused with road asphalt.
Material-specific processing priorities
High-softening-point and conventional grades have different processing windows. Establish softening and wall adhesion before choosing feed size, gas temperature and powder flow targets.
Process selection
Temperature-controlled size conditioning
These are starting points for selection and trials. Choose steps for the actual target; not every material needs every operation.
- 01
Establish the temperature window from softening, melting or decomposition behaviour and distinguish dry particles from sticky wet feed.
- 02
Pre-treat and mill with limited residence: cut, cool or condition where needed and compare actual material temperature and adhesion in impact and jet routes.
- 03
Classify and collect promptly: remove on-size product to limit recycle heating and check caking and surface changes after packaging.
Selection rationale and related equipment
Choose the processing action for the feed before comparing configurations.
Assess impact milling for larger feed and jet routes for temperature rise and fineness. Cooling, atmosphere and protection depend on material properties and trials; specialized powders such as sulfur require a dedicated system assessment.
Information to prepare before a trial
Composition, softening/melting range, thermal stability, additives, moisture, allowed heating, target grade and dust data.
Also provide planned throughput, continuous or batch operation, intended use, gas/heat utilities and available sample quantity. State measurement methods and dispersion conditions for D10/D50/D90 so trials are comparable.
How to evaluate trial results
Process temperature, size, wall deposits and cleaning loss, surface/colour changes and caking resistance after storage.
Trial records should link feed batch and condition with configuration, operating conditions, collection and measurement methods. Throughput, energy and product specifications depend on tests under agreed conditions and should not be transferred across materials or grades.
