Cellulose

Cellulose is a fibrous polymer used in fillers, thickening systems and composites.

Material-specific processing priorities

Fibre length and particle size are not equivalent. Consider cutting and moisture conditioning before comparing fibre morphology, flow and batch uniformity after impact milling.

Cellulose illustration; actual morphology depends on the supplied feed.

Process selection

Pre-cutting and fibre-length control

These are starting points for selection and trials. Choose steps for the actual target; not every material needs every operation.

  1. 01

Clean and pre-cut: remove sand, metal and foreign matter, shorten long fibres and size feed for the equipment.

  2. 02

Condition and process mechanically: compare cutting and impact according to moisture and toughness, recording heating, wrapping and oversize residue.

  3. 03

Classify and recover: separate acceptable powder from coarse fibres and assess whether coarse recycle is useful without excessive heating.

Selection rationale and related equipment

Choose the processing action for the feed before comparing configurations.

Assess impact mills after pre-cutting and air classification for final grading. Long fibres cannot be specified by powder D-values alone; trials also require fibre length and feed-stability checks.

Information to prepare before a trial

Species/composition, plant part, fibre length, moisture, pre-cut size, foreign matter and target powder/fibre requirements.

Also provide planned throughput, continuous or batch operation, intended use, gas/heat utilities and available sample quantity. State measurement methods and dispersion conditions for D10/D50/D90 so trials are comparable.

How to evaluate trial results

Oversize residue and fibre length, temperature rise, flow, feed stability and recovery by stream.

Trial records should link feed batch and condition with configuration, operating conditions, collection and measurement methods. Throughput, energy and product specifications depend on tests under agreed conditions and should not be transferred across materials or grades.
