Artificial graphite

Artificial graphite is produced by heat treatment of carbon feedstocks and is used in battery anodes and conductive formulations.

Material-specific processing priorities

Distinguish graphitized particles from agglomerates formed after coating. Deagglomeration should preserve the coating; shaping trials should compare tap density, fines and yield.

Process selection

Select size, shape and yield together

These are starting points for selection and trials. Choose steps for the actual target; not every material needs every operation.

  1. 01

Identify and condition the feed: distinguish coke, natural flakes, artificial graphite and coating state; remove hard foreign matter before fine processing.

  2. 02

Mill or deagglomerate: fracture particles only where size reduction is needed; compare lower-intensity dispersion for agglomerates after coating or heat treatment.

  3. 03

Shape and remove fines only as required: add shaping when morphology is a target, classify product and fine fractions, and weigh and collect each stream separately.

Selection rationale and related equipment

Choose the processing action for the feed before comparing configurations.

Impact or jet milling controls feed size, shaping changes morphology, and classification separates grades. Not every line needs all three: compare configurations using target shape, added fines and mass balance.

How to evaluate trial results

Size distribution, microscopy, tap/bulk density and product/fines yield; surface area and impurities where relevant.

Trial records should link feed batch and condition with configuration, operating conditions, collection and measurement methods. Throughput, energy and product specifications depend on tests under agreed conditions and should not be transferred across materials or grades.
