Alumina
Alumina is an oxide used in ceramics, fillers and polishing materials; phase and calcination history influence its milling behaviour.
Material-specific processing priorities
Distinguish hard calcined particles from soft agglomerates. Ceramic grades require control of iron contamination and coarse tails; polishing grades also require checks for foreign particles and scratching.
Process selection
Wear and grade control for hard particles
These are starting points for selection and trials. Choose steps for the actual target; not every material needs every operation.
- 01
Pre-crush and clean: reduce lumps to a stable feed size and remove metal and foreign hard particles.
- 02
Jet-mill as required: compare particle-collision processing when fracture is needed; trial classification first if the main population is already on-size.
- 03
Classify precisely and collect with wear control: manage coarse tails, collect grades separately and inspect wear and product impurities.
Selection rationale and related equipment
Choose the processing action for the feed before comparing configurations.
Assess jet mills, classifiers and wear-resistant materials together. Hardness alone does not establish a model or zero-contamination claim; choose using grade yield, impurity testing and component wear.
Information to prepare before a trial
Chemical/mineral composition, hardness/density, feed lump size, coarse limit, angularity or shape targets and impurity limits.
Also provide planned throughput, continuous or batch operation, intended use, gas/heat utilities and available sample quantity. State measurement methods and dispersion conditions for D10/D50/D90 so trials are comparable.
How to evaluate trial results
Full distribution and coarse tail, microscopy, target-grade yield, foreign elements and contact-part wear.
Trial records should link feed batch and condition with configuration, operating conditions, collection and measurement methods. Throughput, energy and product specifications depend on tests under agreed conditions and should not be transferred across materials or grades.
